Robin S. Appleby appointed new Head of School

The ASL Board of Trustees is delighted to announce the appointment of Ms. Robin S. Appleby as the eighth Head of School of the American School in London, commencing 1 July 2017.

Robin is an accomplished educational leader with a wealth of experience in both US independent and international schools. Her experience, knowledge and deep commitment to education are well suited to ASL’s mission, core values, and vision for excellence. ASL has been the fortunate beneficiary of transformative leadership under Coreen R. Hester and Robin possesses the inspiration, intellect, ability to engage and dynamism necessary to build on this legacy of extraordinary achievement. Robin is a passionate promoter of global citizenship and a values-based education, which, when combined with her personal commitment to student-centered learning, ensures ASL will continue to thrive and excel with the highest aspirations.

Robin’s career trajectory spans three continents where she has worked successfully in both nonprofit and for-profit environments. Her early career began as an instructor of writing and literature at the State University of New York at Buffalo followed by teaching and administration positions at the Nichols School in Buffalo, New York, and Hathaway Brown School in Shaker Heights, Ohio. After serving in independent American schools, Robin transitioned into education administration in international schools where she served as a high school principal at the American School of The Hague before joining the Global Education Management System (GEMS) organization in Dubai, first as deputy superintendent and then superintendent/CEO of the 2,300 student flagship school, Dubai American Academy (DAA). Alongside her role at DAA, Robin served in her last two years as principal and brand director for the GEMS American curriculum schools. Most recently, Robin served as director at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools (Lab) where she oversaw educational and operational programs for 1,965 students across five divisions on a two-campus site.

Robin believes in the education of the whole child for success in both academics and in life. The international schools where she has worked adopted American core-standards for K-12 curricular alignment with an emphasis on critical inquiry. While at DAA, she oversaw strategic planning and implementation, campus enhancement programs, a new approach to professional development and evaluation, and the adoption of key curricular programs for literacy and science. Most recently at Lab, Robin oversaw the final years of a campus-wide redevelopment effort; initiated strategic planning processes; and promoted global programs and experiential, school-community partnerships via fundraising, and the establishment of leadership for diversity and program development.

Robin holds a BA in English from Dartmouth College, and an MA in English literature from the State University of New York at Buffalo. In addition, she received an MS in organization development and analysis from Case Western Reserve University, with a focus on leadership development, change management and international applications of organizational development practice. Robin is married to John Leavey, who is English and Dutch, and they are the parents of Eden, who will start at ASL next fall in Grade 6.

The appointment of Robin as ASL’s new Head of School was the culmination of a broad-based international search that began last spring. Throughout this rigorous and comprehensive process, the search committee benefitted from the participation, support and good will of the entire ASL community. We are particularly grateful to our colleagues on the search committee who collaborated closely and put in many hours in support of our efforts to seek the best candidate for ASL.

With the selection of Robin Appleby, the ASL community can be confident of a seamless transition in leadership. ASL is poised for an exciting and enriching future, and we ask you to join us in welcoming Robin and her family to campus in July 2017.
