Welcome from the Lower School Principal

We are proud to offer a dynamic curriculum and rich learning experiences to your child delivered by a highly competent and talented faculty and staff. Our school serves students in K1 (pre-kindergarten, age 4) to Grade 4 with approximate class sizes of between 18 and 20 students. In K1 through Grade 2, each classroom consists of a teacher and an assistant teacher. Grades 3 and 4 share two assistant teachers at each grade level. This low teacher/student ratio permits small group and individual attention. Students are further supported in their learning needs by a team of learning specialist teachers. Music, art, PE, computer instruction, and Spanish classes round out the core curriculum in literacy, math, science and social studies. Service learning is a valued part of our program and each grade level offers opportunities for students to grow and serve the community.

As learners in the 21st century, it is important to prepare students for an ever-changing future that requires creativity, problem-solving abilities, persistence, and comfort with ambiguity. Our inquiry-based approach to learning seeks to cultivate these qualities in our young students. Our standards are high and each child is challenged to progress at his/her level of readiness, with a gradual increase of responsibility as the child ages. The Responsive Classroom approach is part of our learning environment and our ASL values of respect, responsibility, integrity, kindness, and the courage to act are central to developing our students’ character.

Parents are their child’s first teacher and we believe the home-school partnership is essential for each child’s success in our school. There are opportunities for parents and grandparents to volunteer in the Lower School Library and in our classrooms. Ongoing communication from the classroom teacher and administration serve to inform and update parents on important matters in the classroom and in the School.

“Childhood is a journey not a race” and this exciting and fleeting time in your child’s life is to be cherished. Our relaxed and caring learning environment, along with a robust, well-rounded curriculum, provide students with a balance of intellectual, social, emotional and physical growth.
