Board of Trustees

The Admin/Finance Committee monitors ASL’s finances on a monthly basis and oversees the development of and reviews the School’s long-range financial plan. Specific responsibilities include: reviewing and recommending yearly operational budget, including setting tuition and compensation; reviewing audited accounts for the School; overseeing investment and debt strategies; coordinating risk assessment for the School; and ensuring the School meets the Independent School Standards Part 4: Suitability of staff, supply staff and proprietors.

The Advancement Committee oversees the philanthropy programs. Specific responsibilities include: approving the Annual Fund development plan and monitoring the progress of all fundraising, including major gifts and activities for capital/endowment campaigns; supporting programming for alumni relations, communications and events; helping to identify, cultivate and steward prospective and current donors to the School; ensuring fundraising practices and all philanthropic initiatives are in line with UK Charity Commission fundraising guidelines; and ensuring the School meets the Independent School Standards Part 6: Provision of information.

The Buildings and Grounds Committee oversees the strategic and operational aspects of the campus. The committee reviews the development of master planning for the campus and monitors the long-range maintenance plan for all facilities associated with ASL. Specific responsibilities include: overseeing the maintenance and upkeep of facilities; and overseeing technology development, on and offsite security and the implementation of Health and Safety Executive policies. The committee ensures compliance with the Independent School Standards Part 3: Welfare, health and safety of students, and Part 5: Premises of and accommodation at schools.

Neighboring Properties: A subcommittee of the Buildings & Grounds Committee. The committee reviews and monitors the status of neighboring properties and those in the general vicinity and advises the Board on property acquisition. Membership includes the chairs of the Admin/Finance and Buildings & Grounds committees, as well as the chair of the Board. Currently, this committee is dormant.

The Executive Committee coordinates the work of board committees and serves as a sounding board for the Head of School and the board chair on certain matters prior to their being brought to the full Board, including annual goals for the Head of School and annual goals for the Board. The committee also ensures that the School meets the Independent School Standards consistently, in particular in accordance with the Independent School Standards Part 8: Quality of leadership and management.

The chair and vice chair have the specific responsibility to ensure the School meets the Independent School Standards Part 7: Manner in which complaints are handled.

The Governance Committee oversees board governance matters. Specific responsibilities include: proposing new members to the Board of Trustees based on a thorough assessment of the Board’s current and future needs, keeping in mind skills and professions, diversity, School engagement and other characteristics; supporting good governance initiatives and practices that promote a high-functioning board, including conducting a board self-evaluation on a regular basis; planning regular continuing education and training on governance and regulatory compliance; and, along with the Executive Committee, ensuring that the Board has the appropriate skills and knowledge to partner with the Head of School and SLT to fulfill the governance expectations to meet the Independent School Standards consistently, in particular in accordance with Independent School Standards Part 8: Quality of leadership and management. 
 

The ISS Compliance Committee oversees the school’s compliance with the Independent School Standards. Specific responsibilities include: supporting board leadership and Trustee Affairs to ensure board members undergo regular ISS training; monitoring completion of the ISS action plan and seeking evidence of implementation; ensuring board committees have incorporated appropriate Independent School Standards into committee responsibilities and priorities; supporting board standing committees as they adapt to the new mode of ISS oversight; creating a framework for annual review of policies; and ensuring compliance with Independent School Standards Part 1: Quality of education. 
 

The Investment Committee oversees ASL's endowment and reserves. Specific responsibilities include: setting the Investment Policy, target returns and risk tolerance; setting the strategic asset allocation and fund/manager selection; and coordinating draw on the endowment with the Admin/Finance Committee.

The Student Experience Committee maintains oversight of student well-being, students’ overall experience and the school’s pastoral programming. Responsibilities include: ensuring all students have a voice in the classroom and in the school community; supporting and serving as a strategic thought partner to the Head of School and Senior Leadership Team (SLT) in developing students’ global and intercultural competency consistent with the school's mission, core values and DEI statement; reviewing and providing feedback to the SLT on relevant policies, proposals and programming; and ensuring that the School meets the requirements of the Independent School Standards Part 2: Spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of students.
