Artificial Intelligence at ASL: FAQs

AI is rapidly becoming part of everyday life, and many of our students already interact with it outside of school. Rather than ignore this reality, we believe it's essential to guide students through this technological shift. Our goal is to help them build the skills, habits, and ethical awareness they'll need to use AI productively and responsibly, both now and in the future.

We selected Flint because it aligns with our core values around privacy, academic integrity, equity, and student-centered learning. Unlike many consumer AI tools, Flint was designed specifically for educational environments and meets the safety and privacy standards we require for our students.

Flint is fully GDPR-compliant and does not use student interactions to train its models. It also includes safeguards that make it appropriate for learners of all ages, including those under 13. This gives us confidence that students can explore AI in a structured, school-approved environment where their privacy is protected. At ASL, student use is primarily in Middle and High School. In the Lower School, Flint is currently limited to teacher use, with any future student interaction introduced gradually and communicated with families.

Absolutely not. Flint is built to support learning, not replace it. The platform can help with things like writing feedback, extra practice, or concept explanations, but it doesn't give away answers or generate full assignments. Our teachers remain fully responsible for instruction and everything students experience in the classroom. Teachers also have visibility into how students are using Flint through activity dashboards, which helps them guide conversations about responsible use.

Flint allows us to provide personalized support across a wide range of learners. For example, in mathematics, a student can get live, step-by-step feedback on problem-solving, helping them stay on track even outside of classroom hours. In computer science classes, students can receive coding assistance and debugging support while learning programming concepts, allowing them to work through challenges at their own pace. These personalized interactions help us reach students in ways that traditional models often cannot.

We're using Flint's AI Literacy Certification Course to teach students how AI works, where it can be helpful, and how to use it responsibly. Our approach is guided by our AI policy, how AI aligns with ASL's Core Values, and our AI Acceptable Use Scale, which helps students and teachers understand appropriate levels of AI assistance for different learning contexts. Our goal isn't just to provide access to AI but to build understanding. We want every student to develop a strong foundation in thinking about AI ethically, critically, and confidently.

Some of our teachers are using Flint to support lesson planning, such as generating ideas for differentiated instruction or adapting materials to different learning levels. All teachers have been provided with a training course on Flint, ensuring they understand both its capabilities and its responsible use in line with ASL’s values. We can also set school-wide pedagogical best practices within Flint, so the suggestions our teachers receive reflect the goals we’ve established. Flint further gives teachers new ways to engage students, such as creating AI-powered conversations that help assess understanding and extend thinking.

We're committed to using AI with care and intention. We will continue listening to our teachers, students, and families as we refine our approach. Teachers have oversight of student AI interactions, and we've built safeguards into our implementation to ensure AI strengthens rather than shortcuts student learning.
