On Thursday, 26 January, parents Dina P ’19 ’25 and Lala P ’27 were honored to introduce a special guest speaker to Grade 3 and 4 students—Panos Moraitis, founder of Emergency Rescue Centre International (ERCI).
Panos joined students, faculty and staff to teach them about ERCI’s operations in Lesvos, how the organization began, and how they now work to assist Syrian refugees risking their lives to make the treacherous journey across to Greece. He shared a short animated cartoon that explained what’s happening to families in Syria, and why they’re trying to leave and seek refuge here in Europe.
Students were fascinated to learn about life for refugees after making the journey to Europe. Panos talked about the Elpída Home for Refugees in Thessaloniki, a refugee camp defying the stereotypes of difficult conditions in camps by providing comforting and safe places for people to feel welcome and, most importantly, at home.
After patiently listening to Mr. Moraitis talk about his experiences, students were asked if they had any questions about Syria and refugees. Hands shot up all around the room as passionate students were keen to take the opportunity to ask their burning questions and learn more. Why is there danger in Syria? How can we help? Can we donate our clothes to the refugees who need them?
Dina commented, “We thank Panos for giving us this time out of his busy schedule. We appreciate the chance for these young children to ask questions about the confusing things they hear in the news every day. After the presentation, students were quick to start brainstorming ways that they could help.”
Following the session, Panos commented that speaking to our students was the most important presentation of his life. We’re sure our students felt the same!
