2010s

Jordi Albanell ’17 writes, “My history with ASL robotics dates back to 2009, when I joined the FIRST Lego League competition in middle school, before going on to compete in FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) where we won three out of four regionals. After graduating from ASL, I completed an MEng in design engineering at Imperial, and continued mentoring ASL’s team throughout my four years there and into my working life—my way of giving back to an experience that shaped me. When I moved to Singapore three years ago, I sadly had to step away from my 14 years with ASL robotics. That was until January, when Muktar Ali (ASL 2012-18, 2022-present) reached out to ask if I’d be interested in flying to Brazil to help the team strategize. Without hesitation, I said yes. At the competition, I built a web app to help the students communicate and plan tactics with other teams. Given that 48 out of 50 teams were Brazilian, the language barrier was very real. After three intense days, the team came home with two victory medals, winning both the regional and the FIRST Impact Award, making it the most successful robotics trip in ASL history. I'm incredibly glad I got to be a part of it and hope it won't be the last time.”

March 2026

Eleven years after participating in the ASL Film Festival as a student, Isabel Daly ’15 is proud to announce that her first feature film, Washed Up, will premiere at the British Film Institute this March. Fellow ASL alumni Simi Prasad ’15, Carly Craig ’15, and Rowan Yearley ’16 all provided support during the filmmaking process—and ASL itself lent costumes and printer usage as well. Washed Up is a magical realist rom-com set in Cornwall, and follows a struggling artist who falls in love with a woman who occasionally turns into a seal. The film will show as part of the BFI Flare festival on 25 and 28 March. If you're interested in seeing the show, tickets can be purchased on the BFI website.

Antigone Phili ’11, a proud ASL alumna, married Michelangelo Missoni on 31 August at Rocca di Angera, a medieval fortress overlooking Lago Maggiore in Italy. The celebration featured a special family moment when Antigone’s grandfather, Stelios—a former wedding singer in New York’s Greek diaspora—performed three songs, one of which has since gone viral on Instagram with more than 2.6 million views. Since ASL, Antigone has earned degrees from NYU, Fordham University, and a PhD in clinical psychology from Hofstra University. She is now a clinical psychologist at a major New York hospital and the newlyweds reside in Manhattan.

Spencer Hodge ’11 and his wife, Joanna Leung, completed a self-supported bike tour from Oslo, Norway to Izmir, Türkiye. For three months the newlyweds lived on their Surly Disc Trucker bikes, traveled through 10 countries, pedaled 4,800+ kilometers and climbed 35,000+ meters. They were also helped by countless strangers along the way. The tour was everything you’d expect: thrilling, strenuous, and a foundational memory for their new life together! Best of all, Spencer and Joanna had a 24-hour layover in London before flying home to Los Angeles, CA.

Current middle school Scroll editors met up with former features editor Anna Costello ’19 in Nashville, Tennessee, on 13 November. Student journalists from ASL’s middle and high school newspaper and yearbook programs were in Nashville to attend the fall 2025 National High School Journalism Convention, and Anna spoke with the current editors about her time on the Scroll during the 2014–15 school year—and the skills she learned from her experience that she continued to use through high school and beyond.
