Welcome back, May Steinberg ’83!

An ASL graduate herself, May recently returned to Waverley Place as our new assistant choral director. We caught up with May to hear what it’s like to come back to return to the School in a whole new role.
What’s a favorite memory from your time at ASL?
There are so many of them, but all are centered around those teachers with whom I found ways to connect in some way: science teacher Robert Tener, English teacher Don Jesse, math teacher Paul Fecher, and music teachers Dick and Georgia Bassett. These were the people who inspired me the most, and—particularly the Bassets—molded my path to becoming a music teacher.
What brought you back to teach at ASL?
I have always wanted to reconnect with ASL, not necessarily as a lead teacher, but as an accompanist for this amazing music department. The position of assistant choral director was the perfect way for me to reconnect after a successful 38-year career as a lead teacher!
What’s changed since you were a student?
The biggest change is the building! When I attended there were only four colored staircases (red, yellow, green, and blue)—and no art building!
What’s stayed the same?
One thing that hasn't changed is the welcoming feeling I get when I walk through the doors. I feel as happy and content today as I did more than 40 years ago when I was a student. Also, the choir room has not changed, though it was called Music Room A in my day!
What do you hope to bring to your students?
I hope to share my love of music and the joy that I receive from singing, playing, and making music together!
