Susan & Bob

Susan Savage ’61 and Bob Cavenagh ’61

Susan and Bob in 1962

How did you meet? I tripped over Bob’s feet in Mr. Curry’s (ASL 1959-63) algebra class in September 1959.

What was your first impression of each other? It was love at first sight, as the old saying goes.

What was your first date? We sat in the back row of a movie being screened at the American Embassy in Grosvenor Square.

How would your teachers and friends describe your relationship in high school? We were pretty happy with each other, and after 56 years, we still are.

What is your favorite shared ASL memory? Stealing kisses behind the door to the lunchroom at 14a Gloucester Gate, the school’s location at the time.

What is your favorite thing about Bob? He has a wonderful sense of humor. Life is never dull.

Describe your life today. We have lived in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, since 1972. Bob taught at Dickinson College for almost 35 years. We have a cottage on a Canadian island and live there for four to five months a year. ASL remains special to both of us. We were married in January 1965, during Bob’s senior year at Princeton. Then came his service in the army, which brought moves to Oklahoma, Germany, Kentucky and Vietnam. This was followed by graduate school and the start of our continuing chapter in Carlisle. Along the way, we had three children and now have six grandchildren. We treasure them all.
