What’s your connection to ASL?

I am the parent of a sixth grader. Our son, Spencer, started ASL in Grade 4 when we moved to London two years ago. In our first year in London, before lockdown, I volunteered in the Lower School Library, and this year I will be serving as the Friends of the Libraries (FOTL) VP on the PCA Executive Committee.

How do you reconnect with long-distance friends or family?

I did a lot of Zoom calls, as well as regular phone calls, over the last year. Helpful as that was, there was nothing as great as seeing people in person when we traveled back to the US this summer.

How do you stay connected to your...

Community? Along with Spencer, I have been active in the Scouts of America in London, which has kept us with families at ASL and others throughout London. I also enrolled in adult Hebrew classes through our local synagogue, which has introduced me to a wide community outside of ASL. Finally, I have participated in many of the ASL-sponsored events, including PCA meetings, lectures and other community activities.

Colleagues? As the trailing spouse here in London, I miss being in constant contact with colleagues. But I have tried to fill the absence through community involvement in London, and have kept up with several of my former colleagues in Washington, DC, through Zoom, email and telephone.

Joy? Walks around London, listening to various podcasts, meals with my family, camping and trying to learn to play the piano are a few examples. I’m also looking forward to being able to travel around the UK and the rest of Europe now that things are opening up.

Well-being? Daily exercise, reading, listening to university-level lectures on a variety of subjects and meditation.
