What’s your connection to ASL?

I am a senior at ASL. I am involved in various activities within the school, including varsity basketball, Student Council, band and varsity track and field.

How do you reconnect with long-distance friends or family?

Because the pandemic has limited my ability to travel, I often use FaceTime to connect with my grandparents and good friends overseas. When travel restrictions aren’t an issue, my family frequently visits my grandparents in Florida to spend time with them during holidays and summertime.

How do you stay connected to your...

Community? ASL’s community volunteer day in May is one of my favorite opportunities to connect to the community. Earlier this year, I volunteered at Penfold Hub to spruce up their garden with a few of my friends and their families.

Classmates? Social media allows me to indirectly stay updated on my friends’ lives while I am not near them. While I was at basketball camp this July, my good friend and I sent letters through the mail to each other to connect “the old-fashioned way.” It was so exciting to get a message in the mail addressed specifically to me!

Joy? Making an effort to have family dinner with my parents and siblings every night always brightens up my evening. I will miss this when my older brother and sister leave for college this fall.

Well-being? Lifting weights, playing basketball and going on runs help me clear my head when I am anxious about school and life in general.
