Brandon Avery (ASL 2020-present)
What’s your connection to ASL?
I am in my first full year with ASL's admissions office, serving as the Associate Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid. My wife, Louisa (ASL 2019-present), is going into her third year as the high school journalism teacher, and my daughter is in K2.
How do you reconnect with long-distance friends or family?
I am lucky that many of my close friends back home have kids the same age as mine, so visiting becomes a sleepover party for all of us. I also set up monthly lunch or dinner Zoom dates to catch up.
How do you stay connected to your...
Community? My daughter is the primary developer of my community calendar. I have come to know so much about the city based on what she wants to experience or where she wants to play.
Colleagues? Being new in a role where I have to tell the “ASL story,” I find that I often am walking the halls, learning through impromptu conversations and watching faculty teach and work with their students. As for my immediate team, between our random conversations, WhatsApps, and after-work hangouts, there is rarely a dull moment.
Joy? ASL is so engaging that I have found that most of my joy is found in simplicity. Relaxing in the garden, walking along the canal or just going for a long train ride can all recharge the battery.
Well-being? I have really come to enjoy going for long walks and hikes. Before moving here I lived in Florida, so long walks were far hotter and much more exhausting. London has the perfect climate for a good walkabout.
