Barrett Buddies crowned new champions at Alumni Quiz Night
It only took 32 years, but the Class of 1991’s championship quiz bowl team, The Italian Job, was finally defeated! On 2 May, alumni, current and former faculty, staff and guests gathered in the Commons for one of ASL’s newest and favorite traditions, Alumni Quiz Night.
Once again, ASL legends Terry Gladis (ASL 1998-present) and John Wilson (ASL 1971-2009) co-hosted this competition. Among the first alums to arrive were veteran ’91 quizzers Gholam Bakhtiar, Giorgio Mandelli, Gabe Marcotti and Margaret (Farmer) Pringle. They returned, ready and determined to defend their title, first acquired during their senior year (when John Wilson was their quiz bowl host). Alas, in a stunning upset, The Italian Job was knocked down to third place. The darkhorse champions, Barrett Buddies, were newbie contestants representing the 1970s and ’80s. Congratulations to our winners, John Carroll '80, Ed Carroll, Liz Bailey '84, Stephen Coloney '77 and Lance Frey '80. Here’s how we summarized Alumni Quiz Night, in numbers:
30+ guests, including alumni, current and former faculty, partners, siblings, staff and even an adorable baby, ready to quiz all night.
5 unstoppable teams: Barrett Buddies, The Fellas, Impossible Sausage, The Italian Job, and The Millennials.
5 rounds of steep competition, including a sudden death round four and a nail-biting, tie-breaking final round.
4 countries represented among the alumni in attendance: Canada, the UK, Egypt and Singapore. The ASL network is truly a global one!
2 occasions when team members “approached the bench" to contest accuracy of quiz questions and answers.
0 times the judges’ rulings were overturned.
1 new championship team, Barrett Buddies!
Countless laughs and promises to return next year!
Thank you to everyone who attended! It was certainly a night to remember.
