The Annual Fund at ASL

What is the Annual Fund, and why does ASL have one?

Tuition alone does not cover the actual cost of educating each student—in fact, tuition revenue contributes only 90 percent of the expense each student’s education. To offset this shortfall, the Annual Fund is a volunteer-driven fundraising effort that contributes approximately 5 percent of ASL’s operating budget each year. This provides our margin of excellence. It is essential to all school operations and is ASL’s top fundraising priority.
Independent schools like ASL receive funding from several sources: tuition, endowment income, interest, and gifts to the Annual Fund (see diagrams below). The Annual Fund offers an opportunity for all constituencies within our community to contribute to the cost of educating each ASL student. Gifts from alumni, parents, alumni parents, grandparents, and faculty and staff are extremely important and greatly appreciated, as they are used to support current operations.
What to expect:
All parents are solicited for the Annual Fund in the fall, as are alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, and faculty and staff.

ASL aims for 100 percent participation from all constituencies; gifts of any amount truly make a difference and are vital to the fiscal health of the School. Each family is asked to participate financially at a level that is commensurate with their ability to do so.

Many foundations and corporations view parent participation in the Annual Fund as an indicator of a school’s strength.

How does an Annual Fund support students, faculty and staff?

An Annual Fund gift allows ASL to cover costs associated with running a strong academic program and provides the resources needed to support our faculty and staff, and bring outstanding educational opportunities to each and every ASL student:

faculty salaries :: classroom equipment & technology :: athletics :: visual and dramatic arts :: cultural opportunities :: financial assistance :: outdoor education :: facility maintenance :: field trips :: professional development

Who gives to the Annual Fund?

Each year, parents, alumni, teachers and staff, grandparents, parents of alumni, trustees, directors, corporations and friends make charitable gifts to the Annual Fund. ASL aims for 100% participation from all constituencies and we hope that ASL families will make the School one of their highest philanthropic priorities.

How does ASL make Annual Fund appeals to parents?

The Annual Fund appeal to parents is managed by the ASL advancement office and is supported by a group of more than 60 parent volunteers, who serve on an annual basis.

Appeals for support are personalized and sent in the fall. Volunteers follow up via email and telephone during the school year.

Does ASL accept matching gifts?

Yes! ASL is grateful to the many corporations that support the School through generous matching gift programs. This kind of corporate support makes a significant contribution to ASL as it can double or triple the size of your gift. Please contact your employer or the ASL Advancement Office for more information.

How and when can I donate?

ASL accepts gifts of cash in pounds sterling (GBP) or U.S. dollars (USD) in the form of cash, check, credit card and/or appreciated securities which provide tax incentives for donors. You are welcome to make your gift directly online at www.asl.org/giving. The Annual Fund runs from September through June every School year.

Can I get tax benefits for my donation?

Yes. The ASL Foundation (UK) Ltd. is recognized both by the United States IRS as a 501(c)(3) organization (US tax ID 13-6258480) and by the United Kingdom Charities Commission as a registered charity (No. 1086037). Gifts made to the ASL Foundation (UK) Ltd. are tax-deductible for US taxpayers to the full extent of US tax code. This Foundation is also recognized as a UK charity, allowing higher rate UK taxpayers to claim relief on UK income tax on the difference between the basic rate and higher rate of tax on their gross gift to ASL. What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid is a UK government program to encourage gifts to charities. If you are a UK taxpayer, using Gift Aid means that for every £1 you donate, ASL gets an extra 25 pence from the Inland Revenue, helping your donation go further. You must pay an amount of tax that is at least equal to the amount of tax ASL will reclaim on your gifts for the tax year.

Why not raise tuition to cover the cost of the education?

Raising tuition to the full cost per child would be prohibitive. Donations to the Annual Fund—unlike tuition payments—are, for US taxpayers, tax deductible, and contributions from UK taxpayers qualify for Gift Aid. Without charitable support, ASL would be forced to make difficult program decisions.

We already give to the Annual Fund and would like to make an additional gift in support of the School’s mission. How should we proceed?

ASL is eager to work with donors who are interested in particular projects or restricted gifts that help fulfill the School’s mission. Please contact the Advancement Office for more information.

UK taxpayers, please use Gift Aid to make your donation go further: ASL will receive an additional 25p for every £1 you donate. You must pay in income tax or capital gains tax at least equal to the amount of tax ASL will claim on your gifts for the tax year. Fill out the form >>
