Opening celebrations

ASL celebrated the official opening of the School Center for Education and the Arts with a series of ribbon-cutting events in March 2008: a performance of the HS musical 'West Side Story,' the AMIS International Honor Band and Choir Concert, Middle East Night, the European premiere of 'Horton Hears a Who!' and talks by the Honorable Al Gore, Kevin Spacey and poet Ralph Sneeden. Construction on the School Center, funded by the Great Expectations capital campaign, began in June 2006 and was completed in December 2007.

Al Gore speaks to the ASL community

The Honorable Al Gore received standing ovations from the two groups he addressed at ASL on Monday, 10 March 2008. Mr. Gore came to School to deliver the Diana Greene History Lecture and cut the ribbon for the opening of the School Center for Education and the Arts. He also spoke with Grades 4-12 students, faculty and staff in the afternoon.

Mr. Gore shared his concerns about the climate crisis and urged his audiences to have intellectual and moral courage. "The climate crisis presents an unprecedented challenge for our civilization. It requires a global response and different way of thinking." He told the students, "You have to be the hero generation. Follow your heart and find your passions."

Voila!

The School Center for Education and the Arts opened its doors to the ASL community the week of 10 December. Faculty and staff had a chance to tour the facility at the start of the week. The Middle School took the stage for three evenings of Winter Concerts, which played to a packed house each night.
