About ASL

Welcome to the American School in London.

We are a coeducational, independent school of more than 1,300 international students in Kindergarten through Grade 12. ASL is dedicated to providing an American education of the highest quality in an international setting. We follow an American college-preparatory curriculum, and our educational philosophy is characterized by small classes, close student-teacher relationships and an extensive extracurricular program. The School takes advantage of its unique location in the heart of the world’s most international city, taking students out of the classroom to experience London, the United Kingdom, continental Europe and beyond. A diverse student body – our students come from more than 50 countries – adds to this global perspective.

ASL is the oldest American school in London and remains the only non-profit American school in England. The School is organized into three divisions: Lower School, Middle School and High School, ensuring developmental and age-appropriate settings for our students.

Over the years, we have developed a strong school culture that emphasizes the intellectual and moral growth of our students. Our students quickly absorb the values of the School: a commitment to excellence, intellectual self-reliance, an appreciation for diversity and a global perspective. Experiential learning opportunities ˇV learning by doing ˇV are integrated throughout the curriculum, creating an environment in which students are encouraged to take educational risks.

Our outstanding faculty are closely involved with our students, not only in the classroom, but as coaches, advisors, mentors and friends. They foster an atmosphere that encourages our students to engage in rigorous intellectual activity and independent thinking.

We are also a cultural and community center for Americans in London and we try to help families make an easy transition to life in the UK. ASL is committed to a partnership between school and family, providing an environment of openness, responsiveness and communication, an environment that places the child’s well-being at the center.

ASL is accredited by the Council of International Schools and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. We are also a member of the National Association of Independent Schools, the Council of International Schools, the Council for the Advancement of Education and the College Board. The School is owned by the American School in London Educational Trust and is registered as a charity in the UK and a non-profit in the US. It is governed by a board of trustees, made up of members of the School community and the head of school.
